MediSafe Stage 1
Utilising Round 3 ITOL funding, in late 1999, the MediSafe pilot successfully demonstrated the viability of secure communications within the Medical profession. Whilst encrypted communications has been used for many years in the profession, MediSafe has deployed public key infrastructure (PKI) providing both encryption of messages and authentication of participants in an open environment using inexpensive communication mechanisms (Internet mail).

SecureRef
From February to May 2000, the SecureRef project trialled secure referrals from North Richmond CHC to St Vincents and a GP practice to Northern Hospital Outpatients. This project used the systems developed as part of the E-Ref project in Central Bayside and its outcomes have informed the development of E-MediSafe.
